Open House

The Open house day at school is a special time for all parents. This also allows us to interact with the teachers on a one-to-one level and also know how our child is faring. Though most schools inform earlier about the timings and date, it is essential for us to make adequate arrangements to attend the open house or PTA. Teachers generally give direct answers to the child’s conduct and most schools have a pattern that they religiously follow.

Though we are concerned about our child’s development, it is important for us to know that teachers too are pressurized when we ask them too many questions. The meeting should be brief and to the point. The general questions that often come out are whether the child is academically fine and also whether he or she shares things. In case, teachers give us a hint about improving our child this has to be taken constructively.

Teachers or helpers in school know something more than we do about our child and hence we need to understand the teacher. It is also necessary for us to share the child’s habits or express our concerns so that teachers are aware of the set up. Many times parents are inquisitive or upset as to why the child did not win the competition or come first in class. This is a genuine concern but making remarks or insisting that our ward is good will create an awkward position.

Suggestions are often welcomed by the school and we have the right to express them subtlety. It is important for us to communicate our frank but valid concerns rather than get into an assertive tone at the open house forum. One must have great respect for time and make way for others after a decent discussion.

It is a good idea if both parents attend the PTA or open house as this instills a better confidence level. Take time to peruse through the notice board and understand the various projects or skills displayed. Most schools also give the monthly curriculum in advance or a list of projects to be submitted. One can glance through the same and seek clarifications.

Each student of the school is important and it is also nice to acknowledge the work of helpers, bus drivers and other staff. School meets, parties and celebration days gives us a chance to interact with other parents. Children love to see parents participating or volunteering their services.
